Halide sensing using the SPQ molecule
نویسنده
چکیده
The ̄uorescent and halide sensitive 6-methoxy-N-(3-sulfopropyl)quinolinium (SPQ) molecule has been synthesised and incorporated into a hydrophilic copolymer to produce a halide sensor ®lm. The sensor ®lm typically swells in aqueous media allowing dye ̄uorescence to be quenched by the diffusion of aqueous halide ions at high pH. The steady-state Stern±Volmer constants, KSV, for the sensor ®lm towards chloride, bromide and iodide (pH 10) are 24, 65 and 123 molÿ1 dm, less than half the pH 10 solution values of 79, 144 and 236 molÿ1 dm, respectively. The reduction in KSV values of the immobilised dye is discussed and are compared to KSV values for SPQ immobilised in a hydrophobic copolymer. Fluorescence lifetime data, obtained using the single photon counting technique, of SPQ sensor ®lms is also presented. The sensor ®lms are reversibly capable of determining aqueous iodide, bromide and chloride with 1.5, 2.5 and 5% accuracy, respectively, at concentrations around 0.001 mol dm, where chloride concentrations in blood, sweat and some photographic processes are typically in the range 0.1±0.001 mol dm. The hydrophilic sensor ®lms 90% response time to molar halide solution was typically 30 s. The sensor ®lms were found to have a shelf life in excess of 2 years. # 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Chloride-sensitive fluorescent indicators.
Three fluorescent halide-sensitive quinolinium dyes have been produced by the reaction of the 6-methylquinoline heterocyclic nitrogen base with methyl bromide, methyl iodide, and 3-bromo-1-propanol. The quaternary salts, unlike the precursor molecule, are readily water soluble and the fluorescence intensity of these salts is reduced in the presence of aqueous chloride, bromide, and iodide ions,...
متن کاملMeasurement of halide efflux from cultured and primary airway epithelial cells using fluorescence indicators.
The use of the halide-sensitive fluorescent probes (6-methoxy-N-(-sulphopropyl)quinolinium (SPQ) and N-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-6-methoxyquinolinium bromide (MQAE)) to measure chloride transport in cells has now been established as an alternative to the halide-selective electrode technique, radioisotope efflux assays and patch-clamp electrophysiology. We report here procedures for the assessment ...
متن کاملCl- permeability of human sweat duct cells monitored with fluorescence-digital imaging microscopy: evidence for reduced plasma membrane Cl- permeability in cystic fibrosis.
Salt reabsorption by the human sweat duct is markedly reduced in cystic fibrosis (CF). We used fluorescence-digital imaging microscopy in combination with a halide-specific fluorescent dye [6-methoxy-N-(3-sulfopropyl)quinolinium (SPQ)] to determine if this defective salt reabsorption is referable to a reduced plasma membrane Cl- permeability of the epithelial cells that line the sweat duct. Swe...

To detect POCl3 molecule, adsorption phenomena of this molecule on the pure, Al- and Si-doped BN sheet surfaces were investigated via density functional theory (DFT) approach. The most stable adsorption complexes, including POCl3/BN (O-B), POCl3/Al-BN (O-Al), and POCl3/Si-BN (O-Si), were predicted with the adsorption energies of about -8.64, -37.01 and, -62.01 kcal mol-1, respectively. Upon the...

Adsorption of cyanogen molecule on the surface of pristine and Sc-doped B12N12 nanocage is scrutinized using at DFT calculations to investigating its potential as chemical nanosensors. The results show that cyanogen is weakly adsorbed on the pristine B12N12 and consequently its electrical properties are changed insignificantly. In order to improve the...
